HEIC is a new image format. It is popular among iPhone users thanks to Apple adopting the format with iOS 11 in 2017. Technically, HEIC images appear within HEIF containers, although the terms do get sometimes used interchangeably. Regardless, a HEIC file contains a single compressed image made up of a pixel grid.
